“Participatory Research: More than methods”
For some researchers, participatory research is a matter of selecting participatory research methods that are ‘child-friendly’ or accessible in some way so that the participants’ voices can be clearly heard in the research. In introducing this discussion topic I will argue that participatory research should not be reduced in this way. Drawing connections with the concepts of emancipatory research and inclusive research I will argue that it is the researcher’s disposition and the research relationships that make research participatory.

Melanie Nind is Professor of Education and Director of the Centre for Research at the University of Southampton, UK. She edited International Journal of Research and Method in Education 2008-2020 and currently edits British Journal of Learning Disabilities. She is co-director of the National Centre for Research Methods where she leads on research methods pedagogy. Her recent books include What is Inclusive Research? and Research Methods for Pedagogy (both Bloomsbury Academic) and Belonging for People with Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities (Routledge).
